I know several others are plugging this already, but the backlot is holding another slash pairings tourney, and SGA is on there with McKay/Sheppard.  Now, even if you're not normally a McShep fan, please vote in this so we can make a good showing!  Last time, we almost beat out Dean/Castiel from Supernatural; not bad for a fandom that's been off the air for a while!  You can vote once an hour from each mobile device you have, so let's show all these new fandoms that we're not 'dead'!

Here's the link to the voting site: http://logo.to/18uL8Re.

Guys, I am so excited.  For the first time in forever, I feel creative again.  As some of you may remember, I used to make wallpapers and icons fairly often, among other creative pursuits.  Then, even though I've felt a lot better recently, I just didn't have that creative drive.  Which, okay, is a good trade for not being depressed/anxious/whatever, but kind of sad.  Well, yesterday I was flipping through the wallpapers on a sci-fi website that has a lot of (really, really fantastic) SGA and SG-1 papers.  There was a place where you could submit your own papers by email to the site admin, and if he thinks they're good enough, he might put them on the site.

Some of the things there blew my mind how much layering had to go into them, but some of them were easily on par with things I've created in the past.  So I thought, why not give it a go?  I found a screencap from Hot Zone that I'd been working on before, and finished it up, then sent it in.  But I thought I should do one completely from scratch.  So I spent no less than four hours on it this evening, and I really like it.  The base image is a cap from The Tower, and then I've used stuff from other caps.  I'm not sure whether to send it in though.  What do you think, internet?  I've scaled it down here; it's 1024x768, which is the size the site wanted as a minimum.

Zee v. Zed

This has been bugging me for a while.  In SGA, everyone makes sure to put 'Zed' for ZPM when McKay talks, which is fine since it's canon.  But what about Beckett?  The only reason some Canadians say 'Zed' when Americans say 'Zee' is because the British pronounce the letter that way.  So it would make much more sense even than Rodney saying 'Zed' for Carson to say it that way.  Which makes me wonder why no-one does that in fic, let alone why it apparently never made it into the show.

The other thing that bothers me is people who are not Mark Twain writing characters dialectically through the whole story.  Just grates on my last nerve.

I'm sure most of you have probably already seen this, but afterelton.com is running a slash fandom tournament March Madness style. SGA-ers, McShep is down by about a thousand votes right now to some pairing I've never heard of. This post over at the McKay/Sheppard LJ comm has the details.  We survived the first elimination round, let's stay in this!

In other news, Mom and Dad are taking me out tonight for my birthday celebration since they'll probably be gone on my actual birthday.  They brought the cake back from the mountains last night and it's already half gone, guys.  I already got my present last month, so in a way it's kind of anti-climactic anyway.  But it's a good meal I don't have to clean up after, so I'm happy.

1. Reply to this post with "UNICORNS", and I will pick five of your icons.

2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.

3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.

4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Icons selected by [livejournal.com profile] aadarshinah

My IE is acting up, and so it's giving me difficulty with pics today, so I'm just going with their names until I figure out WTF is going on.

1. flansquee!
2. lesigh
3. flyboy
4. Josh victory is mine
5. Captain My Captain

1.    I picked this up from [livejournal.com profile] graphicalrum.  It's Joe Flanigan (obv.), and every fangirl (or fanboy) needs a squee icon.

2.    This is a cap from the A&E miniseries Pride and Prejudice (the only real one!).  It's Lydia Bennett, and that pose is just so perfect for a bored/exasperated sigh.  The text and flower thing were done with GIMP.

3.    I picked this one up from someone, not sure who.  It's one of the SGA promo shots with the totally hot leather jackets that they really should have kept wearing.  I use this kind of on a random basis, just when I feel like looking at the Flan.

4.    I got this from either [personal profile] scrollgirl  or [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash.  It's a quote from The West Wing, which Josh says after they get their Supreme Court nominee to agree.  It's part of a silly monologue, which also contains the lines, "Bring me the finest muffins and bagels in the land," and "It is done, and I have done it."  This is my "yay, me" icon.

5.    I got this from [livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper .  It's Jack Harkness saluting the Tenth Doctor as he's returning to Torchwood after the Year that Never Was.  That scene always got me, and this is one of my leftover TW icons, even though I'm not really in that fandom anymore.

Gah, I can't take it anymore.  I read SGA fic by a lot of different kinds of authors.  And, while often the pieces are very good, the details make the fic, and a few details always bug me and are very common.  First, everyone in the military is not a 'soldier'; soldiers are in the Army.  The correct general reference for someone in the Air Force is 'airman'.  Marines are either 'marines', 'jarheads' (so named for the haircut they give you in basic), and Navy are 'sailors' or 'squids'.

Second, not all officers went to a service academy.  In fact, a very small percentage of military officers went to the service academies.  Most did ROTC in college.  As a corollary, all officers in the military have at least a bachelor's degree, and many, like pilots, have advanced degrees.  These are not stupid people.  Also, as a completely unrelated thing, not everyone from the South has a drawl or doesn't use correct grammar.

Third, fraternization regs only apply to two military personnel in the same chain of command.  They do not apply to civilians at all.

Fourth, and this is Stargate specific, the Ancients' ban on interference was only for ascended beings.  I see this in a lot of fics, so I know a lot of people don't remember this.  The non-intervention policy does not apply to corporeal, mortal Ancients.

Okay, I'm glad I got that off my chest.  I know people don't intend to make these mistakes, and a lot of them aren't aware that they are mistakes.  I think there's an LJ comm that is specifically for people who have questions about military matters; don't remember the name of it, but it's there.  Wikipedia is also rather helpful for these things.  Don't take offense at this, okay?  Just, these things have bothered me for quite a while, and I felt the need to get it off my chest.  We'll save the rant on how people don't know colloquialisms because they only ever hear them rather than seeing them printed for another day (except, it's worse comes to worst; it means if something that's already bad gets worse--you can't have worse come to worst.  'Comes' in this instance elides the 'to pass' that should be there as in 'comes to pass').

(Also, 'should of' etc. doesn't exist; what you're looking for is the contraction of 'should have' which is 'should've'.  And you can't pluralise something by adding 's to it; that makes it possessive.  And if something already ends in 's' you pluralise it by adding 'es', as in Jones becomes Joneses.  To make Jones possessive you just add an apostrophe, Jones'.)

Okay, I lied about the lack of a grammar rant.  Sorry.

Hello, fandom friends.  I'm doing a research paper on the portrayal of the military in Stargate:Atlantis, and I'm wondering if any of you can point me to any good meta on the subject.  (Yeah, life is pretty good when I can design an academic paper around a sci-fi show and cite fandom as a source.)

More GIMP stuff.
The original:

I like to think I've gotten fairly decent at manipulating layers, masks, and colours.

In completely unrelated news, I (might) be working on SGA fic.  On non-cracky wing!fic.  It might even have aspirations of becoming a novel-sized work.  There are notes, so I consider that to be a good start.

So, I've been mainlining SG fic, and I'm at that place where I (mostly) no longer resent SGA for what they did to Sam Carter, who was one of my original favourites from SG-1.  I mean, Amanda Tapping was totally my first girl-crush, with the pixie hair and the big eyes and the smarts.  Yes.  I was really pissed initially when they just got rid of her after a season on SGA and put Woolsey in charge for season five (even though I kind of like Woolsey a lot).  It seemed so unfair after all the work they put in to make her fit in.  But.  I think I'm over that (mostly), and I still have a ridiculous girl-crush on Amanda Tapping.  Though, I think she looks better with short hair than long.
