So my Doctor Who DVDs came in yesterday, and this caused much excitement among the 'Squee Squad.' Muppet and I ended up watching about half of Resurrection of the Daleks, and I have kind of fallen in love with Five just a little. He has this great WTF face, and there's so much manhandling in his era. ♥

Then my laptop started acting up, and it wouldn't even play The Mind Robber, so we switched to Muppet's laptop to watch a bit of the commentary from that serial, and, oh, Frazer Hines.

Director: Wendy, did you like that dress?
Wendy Padbury: No, not at all.
Frazer Hines: We did.

Indeed, bless them for their apparent inability to age.

*laughs* Oh, Frazer. How much do I love thee?

I saw The Mind Robber a few weeks ago, and I'm still giggling over that comment and the others that followed. I can't wait to finish The Invasion so that I can hear some more of his "hinesies".

lol, yes. He's so funny, and I love the way he calls Wendy 'Padders'. Oh, I haven't made it to The Invasion yet! (btw, *adore* your icon!)

The Invasion is amazing. It's the immediate follow-up to The Mind Robber (which makes me glad I saw that one first, as the initial sequence would have left me confused otherwise) and since episodes 1 and 4 were deleted by the BBC (grr...) they replaced those two eps with gorgeous black-and-white animation using the audio tracks that were recorded by fans when the originals first aired. The only downside is that the animators forgot that Zoe was supposed to be wear the sparkly catsuit from The Mind Robber during episode 1, so in the animation she appears throughout it wearing the dress she's only supposed to put on later on. Ah well, that's but a little snag. I'm doing a recap, by the way, which I'll be posting on my LJ (episodes 1 and 2 are up already) but I think you should watch it instead.

Yes, 'tis one of the greatest pities that the Beeb burninated so many of Pat and Frazer's episodes. I can't remember, is The Invasion available on YouTube? I've seen it on Amazon, but I just spent a bunch there...

I'm afraid not. I've just checked it, and the only things available are a next time trailer (with some sequences from the animation) and a spoilerific (so click only if you don't mind spoilers) tribute clip.

I got it from Amazon.uk, where it costs half the price of the average DW episode, even though it's an eight-parter, so it was quite a bargain. I don't know if the American Amazon has that special price, though.

Yeah, that's what I remember, that it wasn't online. :( Guess I'll just have to wait a bit. I think it's 'half-price' here, but that's still pretty expensive for one DVD. Oh, that's about my favourite Two/Jamie icon ever, it is.

Well, here in Portugal DVDs are normally very expensive, so it felt awfully cheap to me in comparison. Now, for this month, I have my eyes on a Dalek box set :)

And I agree: this icons rocks.

Oh, really? I guess I'm just too used to USD, huh? Though BBC stuff is way more expensive than others; at least twice for the box sets. Though my friends and I got the Lost Years set at a decent price, especially since we split the cost. ;)

Well, everybody I know who comes to Portugal finds the prices of DVDs surprisingly high, so it's a general thing :)

Just so that you get an idea, the BBC stuff that gets a national release looks rather cheap when compared to the other stuff. Needless to say, Amazon is my friend. *grins*

Oh, yes, Amazon most definitely saves me quite a bit. I can't say I know anything about Portugal, really, other than history-wise! So I could tell someone who Dom Joao was, but not how much his descendants have to pay for their BBC crack.

Well, it's quite good that you know some of our history, as Portugal tends to be generally seen as nothing more than a spot on the map - which is not that bad, really, as it gives us an air of mystery :P You can't believe the amount of people who believe it's a Spanish province.

Heh, I bet. I'm in a pretty decent Latin American history course this semester, covers precolonial times through the present, and when we covered Brazil, we did a bit on Portugal. Since I'm a bit of a Napoleonic War buff, I already had some interest in the region, but I didn't really know anything about the actual history of Portugal. Pretty cool; much more interesting than yet *another* iteration of American history!

It's interesting that you mention both Brazil and the Napoleonic Wars, since the bicentennial of the Royal Family's escape to Brazil is the talk of the moment over here. I visited several bookstores this week, and they all had walls covered with various books on the subject. But yeah, since the history of Brazil is intertwined with ours it's logical that you were given some information about us.
We have a very rich history, definitely. From Celtic rebels that fought the Romans to Arabian poets, murdered women that were crowned after their death, and even bakers known for killing Spanish soldiers with their baking shovels... Our historical facts rival many legends in terms of uncanny events.

Aha! Celts! My very favourite bit of history, and the reason I'm a history major (even though I never get to study them)

My family comes from the region where Celtic culture and influence is more noticeable, so I was always fascinated by them. I especially love learning about the <ahref="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/lusitanians">Lusitanians (which some people believe were Celts, while others believe they were natives influenced by Celtic culture) and their leader Viriathus.

Oh, I can't remember what that one was about! Oh, and the 'He so totally went there' bit asking Frazer about the kilt! ::dies::

Wendy was commenting on her Gratuitous Sparkly Buttshot on the TARDIS console, I believe. ;)

I really wanted to watch the commentary with you guys. I knew you were going to watch the 5th Doctor serial but I'd thought you'd wait for me on Mind Robber.

We barely watched any of the commentary; it was mostly just to see if the DVD was defective because it wouldn't play on my laptop. We didn't even finish the first episode of the serial.

We didn't watch very much of it, don't worry. I don't think we even finished Episode 1. Like she says, mostly we just wanted to know if the DVD was defective because her laptop's DVD player choked and died on it.

The other episodes are unspoiled and unknown to us! We promise!

Oh, that's right! Say, I'm messing around with a new layout; what do you think so far?

Your layout has Clinging; therefore I approve of it.

It also manages to use a lovely black and red color scheme without necessitating white text. This is a good thing. :)
